Mike B Berry is a singer, producer from Houston, TX, who encases his Gospel songs in melodic Rap layers to promote the word of God through entertainment.
Ambitious in his hybrid Gospel delivery and decorative in his instrumental choices, Michael Berry’s nontraditional musicality can be easily traced back to his early years. Growing up in Houston, the artist was on one hand influenced by the likes of Tupac, Nas, DMX, Scarface, and on the other hand by singers such as Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, and Kirk Franklin. The heavy duality expressed in his musical preferences became in time the most notable feature of the present-day Mike B Berry.
Being the youngest of 10 sisters and 7 boys, Mike B Berry wanted to find his own unique path amongst the very talented family and began teaching himself how to play the drums, the organ, the piano, and keyboard variations. The artistically inclined child had much to learn and implement later on in life from seeing both his parents perform on stage. A pastor in Houston at The Church Of Jesus Christ From God, Mike’s father, Alex Berry, played guitar and sang in church. Mike’s mother, Christine Berry, was a prolific singer and often accompanied her pastor husband on stage with opening numbers and live performances. The duo’s electrifying, lively presence inspired their son to pursue authenticity in his music career as an adult.
As Mike grew, three of his brothers invited him to partake in their recordings as a Gospel quartet named the Berry Brothers. Simultaneously Abigail Berry, one of the sisters, got the young talent to rap in a duo she formed with Mike titled Seventeen 7. The experience prompted the singer to organize his artistic abilities and elevate his performing and songwriting skills.
When Mike’s father passed away in 2001, the usually spiritually conscious artist began engaging in unlawful behavior as a rebellion act against God as he felt that He had abandoned Mike and his loved ones. The eerie effect of the negated grief lasted an entire 3 years in which the singer eventually got to know himself, and in the end, reached home both morally and artistically.
The artist’s faith got tried yet again in 2008 when both his mother and sister passed away only 3 days apart from one another. As he was dangerously close to repeating the same mistake as when Alex Berry left this world, Michael instead found strength in his pain and turned to producing, composing, and singing. The singer is naturally gifted with visionary ideas initiating the melody basis in his mind first and on the instruments second.
Accelerating his growth as a musical talent, Mike B Berry went to study and graduate the
Recording Workshop School of Audio and Music Production in Chillicothe, Ohio, in 2010. The program features notable graduates like Jacquire King, John Keane, Thomas Johnson, and Heba Kadry. Subsequently the artist released his first official single, Champion, in 2012 to the warm reception of everyone knowing the artist and new fans acquired through word-of-mouth. Michael went on to write and produce over 90 songs, many of which are yet to be made public. The Gospel talent’s performing career culminated as recently as2020 with an audience of over 2,000 people at the All White Affair Event by Manly Productions at the Humble Civic Center in Texas.
Michael’s latest We At War music video has been viewed over 16,000 times in less than 6 months since its release in July 2021 and has been reviewed by the international publication Blue Rhymez Entertainment as being “twofold remarkable for it is a combination of Christian Rap and Gospel choir singing, […] a new hybrid genre that’s brought to life by Berry for all believers in the world to relish.”
Currently expanding on his catalog of beats and instrumentals, as well as his own repertoire, the producer is a full-time artist supporting himself and his family through his talent. A national tour is planned for the second part of 2022 which is to be announced on the Mike B Berry official website.
“I always wanted people to find God through being understood rather being talked at. That’s the basis of my music really. Plus, boredom when praying doesn’t help. Probably why I am the only Gospel artist I know who gets to perform in clubs and get people on the dance floor with spiritual records. It still blows my mind sometimes,” shares Mike B Berry for his public.
Starting out, the idea of living the road band life was the last thing on Mike‘s minds. After he did all the local gigs, he realized the only way for us to evolve as a musicians was to hit the road. Over the next five years, we logged thousands of gigs — with the occasional festival appearance — in cities across the country. Our time on the road proved crucial in shaping our sound.
We’re packing up the gear for an extended U.S. tour in support of his new up coming album. Mike’s set list will prominently feature the new stuff but also dive into favorites from our previous releases. Check out our tour page for when we’ll be playing near you.
